Pill Boxes at Dawn

These are, apparently, two Type 24 pill boxes. They and a number of others out of picture follow the River Chelmer up to the Church. There are plenty more on the other side of town as well.

Apparently back during WWII Dunmow was designated an ' Eastern Command no.4 Region category A Nodal Point'. It sits on the GHQ line, which entered Essex at Great Chesterford, followed the River Cam to Newport, and joined the River Chelmer through Dunmow, to Chelmsford, then south to the Bowers Gifford Marshes.

The defence line finally joined the Thames west of Canvey Island...so it goes on for a fair old distance...Anyhow, not too bad a sunrise here.

Great Dunmow is well known for its four-yearly ritual of the Flitch Trials, in which couples must convince a jury of six local bachelors and six local maidens that, for a year and a day, they have never wished themselves unwed. If successful the couple are paraded along the High Street and receive a flitch of bacon. The last flitch trials were held in the town in the summer of 2012, with the next scheduled for 2016. The custom is ancient, and is mentioned in the Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. It acts as a major plot point in Made in Heaven (1952 film).
Source: Wikipedia.

And all I can add is, a flitch is a side of unsliced bacon.

I've forgotten how to set the Sony to capture brackets for HDR...perhaps that's not such a bad thing. It has reminded me how bad the menu system on the NEX7 is though!
